BDA’s Sustainability Working Group: Advancing Towards Net Zero Goals

BDA’s Sustainability Working Group: Advancing Towards Net Zero Goals

The British Drilling Association (BDA) continues to lead in sustainable practices within the drilling industry with ongoing initiatives from its Sustainability Working Group. Established to align with the UK’s net zero targets, this group has made notable progress as at April 2024, emphasising high-level strategies to mitigate environmental impact.

This proactive group, consisting of 12 committed members, has convened six times over the past year. These meetings have been pivotal in refining the document that aims to provide BDA members with comprehensive guidance on embracing sustainability. The evolving or ‘working ‘ document currently includes six subject headings, with four thoroughly detailed, focusing on both immediate and long-term sustainability practices.

Key areas of focus for the document include:

  • Net Zero Achievement Goals: Strategies for carbon reduction or removal, specifically tailored for the drilling industry.
  • Navigating the Roadmap Ahead: Guidance on how the industry can progress towards these goals amid evolving regulations and technological advancements.
  • Emissions Control: Insights into alternative fuels, power supplies, engine technologies, and emissions standards, including the latest on Emission Reduction Systems and Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) emissions control guidance.
  • Sustainability in the Supply Chain: Detailed analysis of supply chain footprints, procurement practices, and product-specific carbon footprints. The section also introduces tools and resources for carbon calculation to assist members in implementing sustainable practices effectively.

The document is designed to be released in parts, ensuring that the information remains relevant and is updated continuously as new technologies and understandings emerge in the field of sustainability.

The involvement of external experts and consultants continues to enrich the content, ensuring it remains innovative and applicable. This collaborative effort underscores BDA’s commitment to integrating diverse insights and fostering a comprehensive resource for its members.

As the BDA Sustainability Working Group forges ahead, the detailed guide will be a critical resource for members, helping them navigate their sustainability journey with confidence and clarity.

The BDA’s initiative is a testament to the industry’s commitment to a sustainable future. By equipping its members with essential tools and knowledge, BDA is spearheading environmentally responsible practices within the drilling industry.
