My name is Matt ‘George’ Hartill. I am Head of wellbeing and mental health support at Lyndon SGB by Brand Safway. Mental health within the construction industry is still a big taboo, we at Lyndon SGB are helping to smash the stigma and discrimination that is found within this industry.
I have been in the construction Industry 25 years and worked at Lyndon SGB for 20 years. I am an advanced scaffolder by trade. Before this I was in the army, in the Staffordshire Regiment. A very proud infantry regiment that had a very long history.
A few years ago, I went off the rails and didn’t cope well with poor mental health that led me down a destructive path that eventually took me to suicidal behaviour. I am here today because of my friends at work noticed I was not right, and I was very fortunate to get the help that was needed.
The support that I got from my friends, colleagues and Lyndon SGB is what greatly helped me in my recovery. From getting therapy, to coming back into work as a yard operative at a gradual pace. To being promoted to a yard supervisor in the office. I trained to be a mental health first aider which I then realised my passion to wanting to help people that are going through problems in life. I trained to be a MHFA England instructor in the adult and youth courses, an ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) instructor, a Suicide First Aid instructor and also get my level 2 in counselling and a path to learn. This led to a new position at Lyndon SGB as they understand the importance of looking after anyone that may need support. I now go out instructing mental health courses, wellbeing and ‘Behind the bike shed’ chats about mental health. While also offering support and guidance when needed on projects and sites.
