Darren is a Principal at DeSimone having recently merged his own practice, DP Squared, in August 2023. His structural engineering team is based in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.

Darren founded DP Squared in 2004, and since then, the firm has successfully completed a diverse range of projects. Their portfolio includes prominent high-rise developments such as Deansgate Square, the tallest (201m) building outside London, and Crown Street, featuring residential towers, an NHS healthcare centre, a school, a public park, and a multi-story car park. Additionally, they've contributed to the Greengate development along Trinity Way and the River Irwell.

Other core specialisms include office refurbishment, as demonstrated by the Havelock project in Manchester, which sets the standard for ‘deep retrofit’ with an estimated 4,000 tonnes of carbon saved. 

Additionally, the firm has a strong track record in bridge design, exemplified by the award-winning Low Fold Bridge in Leeds, and innovative art and sculpture installations, such as Spectra at the Coachella Music Festival.

Throughout his career, Darren’s focused on the design process and how refined structural engineering design can drive economic, efficient and more sustainable solutions.

Before setting up his own practice, Darren also held director roles at Arup and Whitbybird (which later merged with Ramboll), and as a lecturer at the University of Leeds, Department of Civil Engineering.

His personal portfolio includes world-renowned projects such as the National Stadium in Beijing (Bird’s Nest) The Allianz Arena in Munich, The City of Manchester Stadium, HACTL Cargo terminal at Chek Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong, and the International Convention Centre in Birmingham.
